Transition

Note: I partially converted this page to the new format, but realized partway through that it would probably never be used again.  (Lou Scheffer).

Ken Shimizu of the Zephyrs has put together a ceremony for monthly meetings under the new theme, as well as a document listing all of the title transitions.

Chant

"WAYnoon" is the chant chosen by the TT at our recent meeting. It was proposed as a compromise that showed respect for our past father/daughter traditions based on Native American culture, and marked a new direction for Sierra Expedition. It is intended to be as useful and meaningful as "NOONway." Use it in the same fashion as our former chant.

Transition Team Meetings

Minutes from Transition Meeting -- May 15, 2003

To Do
Every Tribe/Circle: Circle Slogan. Create a one sentence (or word) slogan for your circle that touches on how it makes our Expedition stronger. [See the Tioga slogan (above) as an example.]
Summary
Circle Names: We have names. We need slogans.
Chant: Our chant is "WAYnoon".
Ceremonial Sashes: Officers, Elders, and Leaders along with their daughters will wear *ceremonial* sashes.
Hats: Officers, Elders, and Leaders will be provided with a ceremonial (as well as a daily) hat.
Patches: Our Expedition patch is on order and will be distributed to everyone next year.

Discussion/Decisions
Sierra Circles: We have names
To connect us all, we decided that each circle would be named after a "cool" place in the Sierras. Each circle's name is connected to Sierras, so we are all connected through the rock, fire, wind, water and earth that forms the Sierras. Our names are:
Blackfoot -> Ponderosa
Chinook -> Chinook the Wind
Hupa -> Paradise
Miwok -> El Dorado
Modoc -> ?
Ohlone -> Mystic
Shasta (unchanged)
Shoshone -> Zephyr
Snoqualmie -> Tioga

Everyone Greet, Welcome, Encourage and Celebrate with Our Chant -- WAYnoon
"WAYnoon" is the chant. It shows respect for our past father/daughter traditions based on Native American culture, and marks a new direction for the Sierras. It is intended to be as useful and meaningful as "NOONway." Use it in the same fashion as our former chant

Leaders Celebrate with Ceremonial Sashes
Each leader (officer, elder, and circle leader) and daughter will be provided with a ceremonial sash. These will be tasteful and appropriate -- manly sashes for the Dads and princess sashes for the daughters. The sashes will have the following colors: Explorer (RED), Compass Bearer (YELLOW), Naturalist (GREEN), Elder (PURPLE), circle leader (BLUE).

Leaders Identified and Respected with Hats -- Lead On
Each leader (officer, elder, and circle leader) will be provided with a hat. These will be Australian hats which can be worn during all events and will identify our leaders. Our daughters will be proud!

A Circle Chant -- How do you make the Sierras stronger: Create a one line/one sentence motto
Please create a motto based upon your name, that symbolizes how you make the Expedition stronger through your bond with your daughters and other father/daughter circles.

A Sierra Patch -- Connected with our daughters through the earth
We will distribute our new patch next year. It was put together by Star Gazer our new Compass Bearer. Please give him a hearty WAYnoon!

   Minutes from 3/20/03 Meeting

We are the MIGHTY SIERRA EXPEDITION. Image attached.
Name Your Circle -- Name your circle after a "cool", proper name from the Sierra region (such as, Yosemite or Sacramento). Explore.
Keep your Dad/Daughter Name -- Keep your name, unless its an obvious native North American name (such as, Pocahontas).
Call them "Princess" -- They will always be our princesses, but, for awhile, they will truly believe they are.
Bang Your Circle (or Marching) Drums -- Keep banging those drums. They come from all parts of the world. Explore.
Walk with a Big Stick -- Each circle leader will have a ceremonial walking stick. Bring it to ceremonies and more.
Celebrate in Leadership Dads & Daughters Sashes -- Officers, Elders and Leaders along with their daughters will be provided with a ceremonial sash. Manly sashes and princess sashes.
New Greeting -- We will select a new greeting (other than Tally-Ho). Please submit names via email to the salinan-transition@listsite.com.

Transition Meeting

We are the "Sierra Expedition": Our New Name
We wanted to usher in the new way, but keep the power of the old. The Sierra region is connected to the Native American folklore through the naming of our towns, streams, parks, and the like. Living here, we are connected to them, and these lands. The Sierra name will represent us well.

Sierra Circles: Decide on your Name
To connect us all, we decided that each circle would be named after a "cool" place within the Sierras. Each circle can be named after any proper name along the Sierras (such as, Zephyr Circle, Sacramento Circle, Squim Circle). There are literally hundreds (yes hundreds) of names to choose. Please choose a "cool" name. You can make this your first expedition into the Sierras. Bring a couple of maps to your next meeting, and search the topography of the great landscapes of the Sierras, and find "cool" name for your circle. (Keep in mind that this "cool" name may last 10 of years, if not a 100).

Please select a name and send your selection to the salinan-transition@listsite.com. Names will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. So, avoid that mad rush for the name Yosemite and decide now. (FYI: It has been pointed out that Shasta and Snoqualmie lie in the Cascades, hmmmm)

Keep Your Dad and Daughters Name -- Mostly
You can keep your name if it isn't a Native American name, such as Pocahontas. Those humorous, seriously telling, or fanciful names are well liked.

Call Your Daughter a Princess
They will always be our princesses. They love the "princess" fantasy.

Leaders Walk with A Big Stick
Each leader will have a stick to fend off wild unruly animals. Bring it on hikes if you like and please *do* bring it to the ceremonies.

Leaders Celebrate with Ceremonial Sashes
Each leader (officer, elder, and circle leader) and daughter will be provided with a ceremonial sash. These will be tasteful and appropriate -- Manly Sashes for the Dads and Princesses Sashes for the Daughters.

A New Greeting: Send them in
Please send in your suggestion for a new greeting (We have decided to abandon the Tally-Ho greeting).
