History

This page contains links to some materials of interest from previous years of the program. Until Spring of 2003, this was the YMCA Indian Princesses (YIP) Salinan Nation. At that time, the program transitioned into YMCA  Adventure Guides (YAG) and the Salinan Nation became the Sierra Expedition.

The 2000 - 2001 Year

This was the first year of the YIP Salinan nation's existence. Brian "Gathering Storm" Berg served as Nation Chief and Ron Ricci served as Assistant Chief.  Brian is often considered the founding father of our Expedition, so he maintains a special place in our history along with each Nation Chief and Expedition Navigator that followed.

Here are the texts of the Brian's stories as presented at the 2000 fall campout and 2001 spring roughout, respectively.  A picture of Brian and his daughter is included in the spring roughout story.

The 2001 - 2002 Year

Ron "Shooting Star" Ricci served as Nation Chief with Ivor Barber as Assistant Nation Chief.

Here is the text from Ron's story as presented at the 2001 fall campout ceremony.

The 2002 - 2003 Year

Ivor "Whitewisp" Barber served as Nation Chief with Brian Styslinger as Assistant Nation Chief.  At the Fall Campout, Ivor told the story of The New Chief (pictures included).

At this point we had the transition from YMCA Indian Princesses (YIP) to the YMCA Adventure Guides (YAG).  After much gnashing of teeth, the Salinan Nation became the Sierra Expedition.  Ivor's excellent summary of the main points is contained in his plaintive But what shall we tell the children?  A more administrative view of the problem can be found at this location.

The 2003 - 2004 Year

Brian "Growing Oak" Styslinger served as Navigator with Paul Summers as Compass Bearer. Here is his Fall 2003 Story along with his Spring 2004 Story.

The 2004 - 2005 Year

Paul "Star Counter" Summers of the Mystic Circle served as Navigator with Allwyn Lobo as Compass Bearer.   Here is Paul's story that he told at the fall campout.

At the spring roughout, instead of a story, Paul sang this song by  Gordon Lightfoot.

The 2005 - 2006 Year

Allwyn "Brave Wolf" Lobo of the Mystic Circle served as Navigator with Dave Lemire as Compass Bearer.    At the fall campout, Allwyn told of The Legend of the Blue Bonnet. At the spring roughout, Allwyn told the story The Dragon Slayer!

For the swearing in of new officers, see here (Navigator, Naturalist, Webmaster, Scout)

The 2006 - 2007 Year

Dave "Shaggy Buffalo" Lemire took the reins as the Expedition Navigator and told the story of Love and a Compass.
A picture of our leader with his daughters and the Story Stick can be found here.

The 2007 - 2008 Year

Jim "Mountain Walker" Pyle leads the way as Navigator after several years as Scout and Compass Bearer.
At the Fall Campout, Jim told the story of Together with Nature - A Lesson Learned along with his daughter, Kelly.

The 2008 - 2009 Year

Mike "Dancing Buffalo" Liddle accepted the role of Sierra Expedition Navigator after a year of service as the Compass Bearer.
He was assisted by very capable John "Fire Fox" Fox as the group's Compass Bearer.
His story, delivered at Jones Gulch, summed up Together: Friends Forever, Pals Always.

The 2009 - 2010 Year

John "Fire Fox" Fox takes over as Sierra Expedition Navigator after a year of service as the Compass Bearer.
He was assisted by very capable Dave "Hawkeye" Sabel as the group's Compass Bearer.
At Jones Gulch, "Fire Fox" spoke of Courage to be an Advanture Princess.

The 2010 - 2011 Year

Dave "Hawkeye" Sabel is the Sierra Expedition's Navigator, and Peter"Mischievous Moose" Smails is the group's Compass Bearer.
In the Indian Bowl at Jones Gulch, "Hawkeye" told the story about the Princess and the Starfish, highlighting the value that making even small contributions can have on the success of the Adventure Guides program

The 2011 - 2012 Year

Peter"Mischievous Moose" Smails is the Sierra Expedition's Navigator, and Doug Erpenbeck is the group's Compass Bearer.
